At Cleveland’s Beachland Tavern for a concert last May, a friend and I arrived early to snag seats at the bar. Suddenly this girl and guy walked in looking way cooler than anyone else in the room, and we tried to figure out what was their deal. Then showtime arrived, the lights dimmed and we got our answer. They were the lead vocalist, Jackie Popovec, and lead guitarist, John Anthony, of the opening band, the Vindys from Youngstown. I’d never heard of them.
Her potent singing voice and the strong songwriting grabbed me immediately. On some of the songs, she sounded uncannily like Amy Winehouse; on others, she rocked with authority. I snagged a copy of their CD, “Keep Going,” and I’ve been a Vindys believer ever since.
